Like our ancestors who traveled west for new opportunities, our focus remains on cutting-edge industries and economic development dedicated to what’s next for our key industries.
Aerospace
Colorado is home to the nation’s second largest aerospace economy. Within Douglas County alone are locations of Lockheed Martin, Blue Origin, Boeing and United Launch Alliance. Douglas County is positioned as a current and expanding location for development in the aerospace industry. Surrounding the core “well known” businesses, the area is also a thriving incubator for supportive and emerging businesses in the Aerospace arena. This industry includes a broad range of companies, products, and systems for commercial, military, and civil space applications. Specifically, the cluster includes businesses that provide search, detection, and navigation instrument manufacturing; guided missile and space vehicle manufacturing; satellite telecommunications, and research and development. The region is home to 4,270 employees in four aerospace companies, including Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company’s Waterton Canyon campus, which has been a hub of space innovation since the 1950s. The campus provides a wide-range of industry-leading design, manufacturing, and test facilities. Construction is underway at the Waterton Campus on the new $350 million Gateway Center facility that will produce next-generation satellites. Put simply, when it comes to aerospace, in Douglas County, the sky is the limit!
Clean Tech
With more than 300 days of sunshine, Colorado is a natural place to pursue solar technology. With a focus on sustaining our natural resources, Douglas County is excited to welcome industries dedicated to new technologies in this field, including renewable energies, electric vehicles, recycling, sustainable waste management processes, water reuse and bioplastics.
Finance
With an abundance of Banking, Credit Unions, Lending Groups and Investment Management, Douglas County offers diverse and expansive financial opportunities for business operations and residential access. This industry includes businesses involved in banking and finance, investments, insurance, and real estate. The 5,160 workers in the area’s financial services companies provide a foundation for all other companies, including providing capital, funding, and operational support to emerging and growing businesses. Financial services companies are important for growing the region’s entrepreneurial base and start-up businesses. Of the 910 financial services companies in Northwest Douglas County, more than 7 percent of companies were sole proprietors and nearly 85 percent employed 2 to 9 workers. Still, the region is home to major employment centers for companies such as VISA Debit Processing Services, Specialized Loan Servicing, and Nelnet.
Healthcare
World class healthcare is abundant in Douglas County. Represented by multiple locations of UC Health, Advent Health, Kaiser Permanente, Sky Ridge Medical Center and Children’s Hospital as well as a multitude of Urgent Care, Medical Office Centers and independent service locations, employment and care opportunities are numerous and locally diverse. Healthcare includes a large and diverse group of companies that provide preventive, curative, and rehabilitative services offered by healthcare providers, medical and specialty hospitals, kidney dialysis centers, other healthcare organizations, and centers focused on outpatient mental health and substance abuse, diagnostic imaging, and emergency care. Additionally, companies that provide nursing care, assisted living, and long-term care services for individuals, families, and the elderly are also included. Northwest Douglas County’s healthcare industry is resilient and has added workers every year since 2012 and is expected to continue to increase in the region due to a growing and aging population. The industry cluster currently includes about 440 healthcare companies with 3,440 workers. Beyond physical well-being, the County is also committed to mental health. A decade ago, the Douglas County Mental Health Initiative (DCMHI) was established to unite community partners, address unmet mental health needs, connect people to mental health services and prevent those in need from falling through the cracks of the mental health system. Today, the initiative includes more than 50 organizations that are committed to offering mental health services and resources to the Douglas County community.
